Emergency crews worked for hours Thursday morning to extinguish a five-alarm fire at a construction site in south Charlotte that left an apartment building under construction totally destroyed. Construction workers told the Charlotte Fire Department that there are still two construction workers that are unaccounted for. In February, two police officers and a paramedic were killed near Minneapolis after a man, who was barricaded in his home, opened fire on the police. Officers returned fire, and the gunman was later reported dead. “He fought for several hours and passed away from his injuries with his wife and family by his side tonight,” Chief Jennings said in a statement posted to social media on Monday evening.

Joshua Eyer was identified as the CMPD officer who died on Monday night. Eyer worked with CMPD's North Tryon Division for six years and was recently named the department's Officer of the Month. Eyer, the CMPD officer whose death was announced Monday night, is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son, the police chief said.
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles shared a statement on Twitter asking everyone in the area to be safe and let first responders work. Quiroja said many of the workers are without their jobs and their tools, since they were forced to leave those behind when they rushed out. “They started getting out, they started screaming ‘get out, get out because the building is on fire,’” he described to Sáenz. He described what happened when news of the fire spread. Sáenz spoke with Alejandro Quiroja, who was working on the building’s metal framing on the first floor. He said he made sure everyone on the crew he leads was together and got out, but was worried for others.
