LaLaurie Mansion Haunted LaLaurie House

madame lalaurie house

She became a grisly legend who continues to horrify everyone who hears her ghastly story. The LaLaurie mansion still stands today, and people consider it one of the most haunted properties in the country. Throughout the years, various landlords renovated the building, turning it into apartments and even a school. Several families even attempted to live there, but none made it beyond a few months, reporting that they heard horrible cries and groans calling out in the night. Slavery was legal at the time in New Orleans, but there was a law in place to prevent mistreatment of slaves by their owners. The LaLaurie’s lavish lifestyle required a large staff of slaves.

Other stories said that LaLaurie kept her cook chained to the kitchen stove and when her daughters attempted to feed the slaves, she beat them as well. This could be the reason that several people reported that Madame LaLaurie’s daughters seemed very quiet and very pale. The LaLaurie Mansion at 1140 Royal Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana is said to be one of the most haunted places in what is called the most haunted city in the United States. If, in fact, this building does house some ghostly entities, it comes as no surprise because of the property’s history of brutality. In 2010, Michael Whelan bought the mansion and is the current owner.

What Happened To The Infamous LaLaurie Mansion In New Orleans?

madame lalaurie house

It isn't outside the possibility that the townspeople found slaves in poor conditions inside the LaLaurie House. He warned her about the laws regarding the treatment of slaves. So, it stands to reason that, in private, anyways, she wasn't the nicest person to the slaves she owned. Some even wonder if Delphine's supposed hatred toward slaves stemmed from the fact that all of her male relatives, including her father, had mistresses who were free women of color. However, the exaggerated stories about slaves being found missing skin and heads drilled with holes are nonsense.

When Dr. Louis Lalaurie came into the picture, in 1825, Delphine was an experienced and shrewd woman of wealth. She loved having parties that went into the wee hours of the night. Some nights included jumping into the canal on their property, and stealing the clothes and shoes of the male guests, forcing them to go home in bare feet and nightshirts. When Delphine's mother passed away in 1807, her father explored companionship in an untraditional, though popular, manner. The Chevalier Louis Barthélémy de Macarty had a long term relationship with a free quadroon, Sophie Mousante. In 1815, Sophie gave birth to a daughter, Delphine Emesie Macarty.

You can tour this home, but you need to make a reservation beforehand since they do not offer ticketing options on-site. Even if you’re not overly interested in the house, the tour is worth it just for the views you get of the city. On open park days, you don’t have to pay to park or to enter the grounds, but you’ll want to check in advance since they are closed for special events. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the tennis drama stars Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor as longtime friends whose relationships combust on and off the court.

Second marriage and death of husband

A few of these concerned citizens began to tell Judge Canonge about the captive bondspeople. Prompting the Judge to politely ask permission of Dr. Lalaurie to have the slaves removed and taken to safety. It is reported that Lalaurie replied, "there are those who would be better employed if they would attend to their own affairs instead of officiously intermeddling with the concerns of other people." In 1831, Madame Delphine Lalaurie purchased the lots on Royal and Hospital (now Governor Nichols), which would become the infamous Haunted Lalaurie Mansion. But their lavish home in the Vieux Carre did not a happy marriage make. On November 16, 1832, Delphine Lalaurie petitioned the courts for a separation from the bed and board of her husband.

madame lalaurie house

Her daughter claimed to have received letters from her, though no one had ever seen them. Some say there were only a handful of bodies; others claimed there were over 100 victims. Either way, it cemented Madame LaLaurie’s reputation as one of the most brutal women in history.

Historic Home Museums in Los Angeles

As soon as they smelled the fire, Madame Lalaurie and her husband, Dr. Lalaurie, scrambled from room to room in an attempt to save as many of their most precious possessions from the choking flames. Meanwhile, their slaves remained locked in their quarters, unable to break through the locked door that held them in. On April 10, 1834, a fire started in the kitchen of the mansion of Madame Lalaurie.

It quickly spread throughout the rest of the elegant two-story building, eating through walls and destroying paintings and exquisite pieces of art. Just as the stories surrounding her cruel and heinous actions towards her slaves have circulated, so have the speculations and rumors on where exactly she ended up. It turns out an American poet, William Cullen Bryant, published a journal that uncovers the mystery for us.

If you’re a horror movie fan, you must drive by the Nightmare on Elm Street house. It’s located in Los Angeles, and the iconic view you get from the street makes it well worth the trip. It’s currently closed to the public and no tours are available. Still, a quick look at the property will leave it feeling smaller than you remember. The show portrayed it as a two-story home when in reality, it’s a single-story house.

The couple completed the two-story mansion in the Federal architectural style. Situated on the corner of Royal and Hospital (now Governor Nicholls) streets in the French Quarter, it seemed like a handsome addition to the neighborhood. But life inside LaLaurie Mansion was nothing short of hellish. The Avila Adobe gets its notoriety from the fact that it’s the longest-standing home in Los Angeles. It’s one of the smaller homes though, so you don’t need to carve too much time out of your schedule for the tour. But because of its historical significance and because it provides a look back at the architectural style from 1818, we think it’s well worth the visit.

Witnesses continued to cite instances of slaves being in the house one day and gone the next, with no explanation. However, in 1833, Delphine chased a small enslaved girl with a whip until the girl fell off the roof of the house and died. LaLaurie tried to cover up the incident, but police found the body hidden in a well.

Facts are spun into tales of brutality and torture until the truth is a muddled pool that can never be sorted. The more research one does, the more confusing the whole story becomes. But it was Delphine's third and final marriage in 1825 which caused the most controversy. He was a physician, though today, he might have been considered more of a chiropractor. One of Delphine's daughters from her second marriage had some deformities along her spine and was subsequently ill. Hired to cure the girl, Louis LaLaurie used all sorts of medical equipment that looked quite torturous.

It’s still cool to check out, but currently, there are no available public tours inside the house. Neutra ran his architectural from the original house from 1932 until a fire destroyed most of the main building in 1963. The Research House was rebuilt with the most modern materials and design adaptations by Neutra and his son Dion in 1966. There is also a Garden House on the property that was occupied by Dion Neutra and his family. Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona.

[1] The Bee went on to condemn the “barbarous and fiendish atrocities committed by the woman Lalaurie upon the persons of her slaves.” [1] The firefighters brought these enslaved people to the Cabildo. When questioned, Delphine's husband told investigators that they needed to just mind their own business. Delphine herself escaped the house, but an angry mob stormed the structure and destroyed it after the discovery of the abused enslaved people was made public. Following the fire, two of the rescued enslaved people died from their injuries. In addition, the backyard was excavated and bodies were disinterred. Although one was the child who had fallen from the roof, reports vary as to how many others were buried in the yard.

Ramon was an officer of the Spanish Crown and 2nd in command to the Louisiana governor. He had recently lost his wife on the treacherous and cruel voyage from Spain to Louisiana to step into his appointed position. He and Delphine were married by the bishop in a private ceremony on June 11, 1800.

He claimed that his friend told him that there was a demon in that house who wasn't going to rest until he had met his end. Is it possible that at least some of the ghostly phenomena can be a result of this brutal murder? However, nobody will know for sure until a real paranormal investigation team can investigate this location. Only then, by communicating with the dead who still reside here, can we hope to get to the bottom about the truth of the ghosts at the LaLaurie Mansion. On April 10, 1834, a fire at the LaLaurie mansion in New Orleans, Louisiana, leads to the discovery of a torture chamber where enslaved workers are routinely brutalized by Delphine LaLaurie.

One medium who visited the house suggested that much of its evil had dissipated, leaving its ghosts to wander freely and without fear of their former mistress. And even actor Nicholas Cage, who briefly owned the house in the aughts, lost it to foreclosure in 2009. But the extent of Delphine LaLaurie’s cruelty remained just a rumor until April 1834.

The Most Haunted New Orleans Mansion?

Eulalie was the daughter of an enslaved woman and the Count himself. Eugene and Eulalie had seven quadroon children together in what appeared to be a successful union. Eulalie must not have cared that Eugene also had children with two other free women of color, five children in fact. Today, the LaLaurie house is one of New Orleans' most famous attractions.

Authorities decided to fine LaLaurie and force the sale of the other enslaved people on the estate. So hospitable was Madame LaLaurie that her guests looked past what was observed to be the “singularly haggard and wretched” state of her slaves. Indeed, some observed her beating her own daughters when they attempted to feed the famished servants. Although polite to her slaves when in public, even emancipating two (Jean Louis in 1819 and Devince in 1832), public rumors circulated regarding her cruelty and extreme treatment. A local lawyer was dispatched to 1140 Royal Street to investigate the situation, but he found no evidence of mistreatment.

Then, a sudden fire in the house broke out — and revealed the depths of her depravity. But the story of LaLaurie Mansion — so named for its mistress, Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie — is one of torture and death. Eames House is another home you might not have heard of if you’re not into architecture, but if you are, it is a home you must check out. It is all about modern design, and with large open spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and unique themes throughout, it’s really a masterpiece. The Schindler House is one of the more unique homes on our list.

It doesn’t feature a formal living room, any bedrooms, or any common living areas. While you might not fully recognize the Stahl house at first blush, it’ll probably strike you as familiar. That’s because the Stahl house is a fixture in many commercials with its rooftop pool, bar, and lounging area that overlooks the city of Los Angeles.

Get all of today's events in just one email featuring a range of topics. The ghost of Madame LaLaurie herself doesn’t appear on the property but has allegedly been seen at the nearby St. Louis cemetery, where she once worshipped. As word spread, other socialites were no longer eager to participate in their social events or interact with the LaLaurie family. In 1804, after the United States had acquired the territory in the Louisiana Purchase, Don Ramon was called back to Spain. When he and Delphine, who was pregnant, stopped in Cuba, Don Ramón died suddenly. A few days later, Delphine gave birth to a daughter and soon returned to New Orleans.

Following the fire at LaLaurie Mansion, the house embarked on an uneasy, erratic journey. After lingering in ruins, it was made into an integrated school, a conservatory of music, and a home for the homeless. “Upon entering one of the apartments, the most appalling spectacle met their eyes,” The New Orleans Bee reported on April 11, 1834, the day after the fire. Wikimedia CommonsThough it looks peaceful today, LaLaurie Mansion was once the site of true horrors.

She sensed the spirit of a young boy who liked to play pranks on the living and the spirit of a little girl who was often nervous. "Whatever happened, then with LaLaurie, does not visit the house any longer." But these girls were young enough to be probably not aware of Madame Delphine and the devastating tragedy some decades earlier. Moreover, it was unlikely that the teachers themselves would tell six, seven, or eight-year-olds about the starvation and immoral torture of slaves some decades before.

There are records kept in France that show she died on December 7th, 1849. More significantly, letters exchanged with her children explain how Delphine desperately wanted to return to New Orleans, but that her children forbid it. "Do you not remember what happened there?" her son asked in one massive.

Her ship docked in Mobile before continuing the journey to Paris. (Does the arrogant Delphine seem the sort to hunt game?) Other stories report her returning to New Orleans, later in life, under an assumed name. While historians widely discount this story, there is a reason to believe she could have. According to some, the Blanque Tomb in St. Louis Cemetery #1 holds her body.

Laws were in place to maintain a certain standard of upkeep for enslaved peoples, but on at least two occasions, court representatives went to the LaLaurie home with reminders. Despite all of the ghost stories and paranormal happenings at the LaLaurie House, it would be folly to assume that all of them can be traced back to Madame LaLaurie and her mistreatment of slaves. In 1894, a tenant who lived at the LaLaurie Mansion (the house was converted into Apartments) was brutally murdered in his room. They found his belongings ransacked as if someone had gone through them. The police assumed that he was a victim of a robbery, even though nothing of value was found missing.

People have reported hearing tortured shrieks and moans coming from within. Some have smelled burning flesh or heard the dragging of chains. Others say they’ve seen actual ghosts, including a large Black man in chains and a white woman with glaring eyes.

house of lasagna

The handmade dish (the pasta for the lasagna is actually made in Bologna, Italy and flown over) comes with green pasta is certainly one of the heavier options, layered will all sorts of meaty goodness. There may be no more iconic lasagna in all of Los Angeles than Angelini Osteria’s lasagna verde omaggio nonna Elvira. Housemade spinach pasta is layered with beef and veal ragu, béchamel, and parmigiana reggiano. The omission of ricotta keeps the dish surprisingly light, while the signature topping of fried spinach leaves adds a level of textural interplay that all other lasagnas should aspire to attain.

All Day Breakfast

The pesto lasagna is something Francesco says is exclusively found in Liguria. “It’s rarely served in any other region and the flavor profile is of the people who live there,” he said. Pasta Sisters sells trays of the lasagna year-round, and for the holidays, there are seasonal flavors such as pumpkin and also mushroom. All of our Lasagnas are hand-made, from the traditional Lasagna alla Bolognese, to more the more contemporary "Lasagna of the Day" made with organic and local farm-to-table ingredients. The arcade of the Marcia is now dry, but the same water still feeds mountain springs east of the capital. And though it now travels through a modern network of tunnels and tubes, the water is still referred to by its ancient name and is still considered Rome’s best drinking water.

Side Dishes

The Aqua Marcia was the longest of the city’s aqueducts, running nearly 60 miles from its source in the countryside to the heart of ancient Rome. My first cookbook The Tried and True Cookbook is available to order! It’s packed with family recipes, favorites from readers, and 25 brand-new exclusive recipes.

Speaker Ronald Mariano and Aaron Michlewitz, the Jewish chair of the Ways and Means Committee, didn’t hesitate to adjust the schedule, she told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. It’s hard to imagine a more popular lasagna right now than the one at Nightshade, Mei Lin’s Asian-leaning Arts District restaurant. The layers are filled to with tofu and spices to resemble a mapo tofu in both texture and taste, but eating the thing inside the decadent dining room, formerly a warehouse, is purely unique to Los Angeles. Crossroads Kitchen really can do it all, from seafood-less seafood towers to a spectacular lasagna that comes with almond ricotta and plenty of marinara.

The layers are painted with the paste rather than sauced, adding just enough to envelop the pasta without being overwhelming. The ragu has a distinct caramelized sweetness from the carrots and onion with a long-developed beef flavor. Francesco sears the meat until it’s crispy for the sauce, which cooks anywhere from 5 to 6 and a half hours. It tastes of long-simmered carrots and tomato that simply melted into the meat. The top layer is bechamel that turned browned and bubbly in the oven, just as rich as (if not superior to) a blanket of melted cheese. Sinatra would nod, then politely suggest the lasagna anyway.

While La Pergoletta may be primarily known for its customizable pasta menu, don’t overlook the lasagna that comes in bolognese and cream of mushroom varieties, especially now that they have two locations in Los Feliz and Silver Lake, respectively. If you want to feel like you’re eating at Grandma’s house for the holidays, Ceci’s Gastronomia is also selling trays of lasagna. I had always assumed that Rome’s aqueducts were a kind of aerial plumbing, their water channeled atop arches. But the Marcia, like all classical aqueducts, ran largely underground. The water moved by the force of gravity, and arches and bridges, which were expensive and vulnerable to attack, were only used to span ravines, valleys and other dips in the terrain that would have interrupted the flow.

Lasagnas

At Ceci’s Gastronomia in Silver Lake, the lasagna are assembled in individual foil containers so that every slice comes with crispy corners. This mid-range pasta bar is a haven for wine lovers and Downtowners wanting a casual meal that won’t break the bank. The lasagna di carne sticks to the ribs with its hearty meat ragout and plenty of cheese.

Both chefs were born and raised in the northwest region of Liguria, though the ragu is inspired by Francesco’s family in Emilia Romagna. Both sauces are layered with fresh pasta, bechamel, Pecorino Romano and Parmigiano. The week of the budget debate is the only time during the legislative cycle that dinner is provided for the representatives because they typically work all day and well into the night, Balser said.

The ingredient list is filled with most of the same ingredients that you would use to make a classic lasagna. They’re all very simple and many are staples that you likely have in your kitchen. My family LOVES lasagna and it’s fun to experiment with different variations like Pepperoni Pizza Lasagna Rolls, Easy Vegetables and Kale Lasagna Roll-ups or this Lasagna Soup. House of Lasagna offers delicious pastas and rice meals but what we love most is, of course, their cheesy baked lasagna. One of Hollywood’s most legendary restaurants has been serving its popular lasagna for decades. Although the dish may seem rather pricey, like most of the dishes at the iconic eatery, the hefty helping is more than enough to share.

It’s deeply satisfying, and it got me thinking about lasagna in Los Angeles. El Segundo is buzzing about Jame Enoteca, the corner strip mall pasta spot that’s dedicated to making things by hand. The rustic touch works well for rotating lasagnas like their occasional mushroom option that’s served in a skillet. The sauce is a vibrant forest green and tastes of basil picked fresh from a garden, enriched with purple garlic, Parmigiano, Pecorino Romano and buttery pine nuts.

From easy-drinking cocktails to those famous rice balls, Antonia Lofaso’s Venice mainstay offers many tasty things within its brick-walled confines. The lasagna is one of them, thanks to layers on layers of Italian sausage, meat sauce, and parmesan. Sugarfish co-founder Lele Massimini reformatted Sugarfish’s affordable model to pasta, with sub $20 prices on all of its dishes.

There are plenty of places offering the Americanized, cheese-heavy lasagna that I like to call Garfield-style. Sunday Gravy in Inglewood serves one of the better versions. But there are a number of chefs making recipes from their Italian hometowns, made with fresh pasta and without any shredded mozzarella. I credit Gino Angelini and his lasagna verde for introducing many diners to the pasta-ragu-bechamel lasagna at Angelini Osteria more than 20 years ago. Named after his nonna Elvira, he layers sheets of green spinach pasta with bechamel and a beef, veal and truffle ragu. At Ceci’s, you can have four corners of either lasagna al ragu or lasagna al pesto, each style representing where the Lucatortos’ families are from in Italy.

Marko Purišić (born 5 July 1995), known professionally as Baby Lasagna, is a Croatian singer-songwriter and music producer. He is set to represent Croatia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song "Rim Tim Tagi Dim". A spokesperson for Mariano told JTA that it was important for Jewish House members and staff to fully participate in the budget hearings, despite it falling during Passover, because of the current climate. That’s because the first Monday after Patriots’ Day this year was April 22, which coincided with the first night of Passover, when Jews around the world gather for the Passover seder.

Here, the ruined arcades of six of the 11 aqueducts that once supplied the Eternal City with an astonishing volume of water — by some counts double the per capita water allotment of a typical 21st-century American city — have been preserved. There are 14 members of the Kosher Caucus, the representatives who identify as members of the Jewish community – either born Jewish or married into Jewish families. They will work with their non-Jewish colleagues to vote on more than 1,500 amendments to the budget this week. So instead of the usual lasagna or Chinese food, dinner on Thursday was prepared by The Butcherie, a kosher grocery and caterer in Brookline, the area’s historic Jewish neighborhood.

The lasagna, made using his grandmother’s recipe, is one of the best-selling dishes on the menu. And Sinatra, who grew up eating the lasagna every two to three weeks in Padua, a city just 20 minutes outside of Venice, was the perfect person to convince diners to give it a try. Hailed by Pliny the Elder as “the most famous of all waters in the world for coldness and wholesomeness,” the Marcia was also the longest of the capital’s ancient aqueducts, running some 56.8 miles from source to city.

She said that in more than a quarter century serving in the legislature, she did not recall any time when the budget debate overlapped with the first days of Passover, which fell unusually late this year. There are a few things that you can do to make sure that yours turns out perfectly every time. It is the antithesis of the Garfield lasagna, a progression of bechamel, beef Bolognese, Parmesan cheese and fresh sheets of pasta. Most of the height of the five to seven layers is lost in the oven and the slice appears slack and slumped on the plate. It’s a deluge of sauce and filling, with creamy bechamel and Bolognese melding into a lush symbiosis with the delicate pasta. Norwegian Mediterranean Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Norwegian Cruises to Mediterranean

norwegian cruise line mediterranean

Could not have asked for better with our tour guide. He was a fantastic story teller and could not have done any better bringing the city to life. After this tour ended we walked to a restaurant our Concierge recommended for Pizza. I had read much about Gritty Naples but I did not concur with what I had read.

Grand Hyatt Athens

I had planned to get off at St. Marks Square on the return but it started raining pretty hard so we went back to the ship. It served a purpose for free so I couldn’t complain. Had I actually spent $49 pp on this it would have been a waste of $49 pp.  We have also spent time in Venice in the past so had no burning desire to see all there was to see here.

With an overwhelming world of choices, we understand you may need some personal assistance to plan your perfect vacation. Norwegian Star Dining Options

Discover Athens & Piraeus on our double-decker buses. Admire iconic sights, visit the Acropolis, explore museums, stroll through Plaka and more.... Resplendent in art, history, glorious views and culinary delights, a visit to Tuscany in Italy is a definite highlight. Norwegian Cruise Line has recently announced their 2024 Mediterranean sailings aboard Norwegian Viva, the second ship in the ground-breaking Prima Class.

Land Vacations

We booked the Venice hoho with Leonardo Da Vinci Museum. We did not have a terrible time but there are  much better ways to see Venice. I had read reviews of this excursion prior to sailing so my expectations were tempered. We took the boat to Murano, got off, walked around the island and had lunch and then took the boat back to the port.

Norwegian (NCL) Cruises to the Eastern Mediterranean

Forget packing and unpacking at every city, and say goodbye to checking in and out of hotels every time you want to explore a new place. You'll essentially be aboard a traveling hotel with amazing accommodations and plentiful amenities, to make your trip as smooth and comfortable as possible. If you're cruising from Rome, there are many museums and cathedrals to explore.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

View our photo gallery of Mediterranean cruising photos from Norwegian Cruise Line. Keep in mind, this is just a sample of the sights waiting for you on a Norwegian Cruise Line Mediterranean cruise vacation. From casual buffets to exquisite specialty restaurants, learn everything there is to know about dining on our ships. We know the destinations you'll be visiting and what there is to see, do and experience.

If only I could afford this type of travel regularly! We ended up at the Argentina Residence near the Pantheon. Pretty much walking distance to everything. Clean, a nice quiet room, comfortable bed, great staff and really good breakfast. The hotel set up pickup at the airport and also a ride to the ship on embarkation day. 50 euro for someone waiting at the airport with a sign was money well spent.

Norwegian Star Amenities

The scenic port city of Trieste is steeped in history and natural beauty. Nestled atop a limestone plateau on a thin strip of land between the Adriatic Coast and Slovenia, the region has been ruled by multiple empires through the ages. This cultural fluidity is reflected in the awe-inspiring architecture and fusion of delicious cuisine found throughout the city. Also wanted to mention we did this trip with carryon only luggage.

I can't think of a better way to kick off your cruise than arriving in this city and enjoying all it has to offer. A cruise to Nice/Monaco (Villefranche) offers the chance to experience the glorious French Riviera. Alternatively, simply find a patch of white sand and spend the day relaxing by the sea, maybe ambling to the closest taverna for a beer when the mood hits.

Or choose to take a gourmet tour of the Chianti Region and San Gimignano which includes a visit to a winery for a tasting. Split, Croatia is another port that has a bustling town right at the cruise ship port. You can stop at a restaurant or walk through the old walled part of the city very easily without a tour.

Just like Norwegian Prima, the new vessel will provide guests with elevated experiences including more wide-open spaces, incredible design and exceptional service. For food enthusiasts, a culinary tour through Lungotevere, one of Rome's oldest sections, is a must. Enjoy visiting markets, pizza bakeries, chocolate shops, and a coffee shop where the water traces its source to an ancient aqueduct.

Starting on December 22, 2015, MSC became world's first major cruise company to homeport a big-sized vessel in Cuba. Until 2016, according to the Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) were not allowed to visit the country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. The first Royal Caribbean ship to Cuba was Empress of the Seas with roundtrips from Miami and Tampa. The itinerary program started on April 19, 2017 (5-night Miami to Costa Maya and Havana).
